United Airlines Flight 175 Hijacking and Crash History
One of those terrible examples in history books is United Airlines Flight 175 on the eleventh day of September, 2001. On its domestic flight route from Boston to Los Angeles, five hijackers hijacked the aircraft from the terrorist camp called al-Qaeda. What followed was a coordinated attack that turned out to be a historic terrorist event in the effort to reshape the very basis of the world.
United Airlines Flight 175 Information and Hijacking Events
United Airlines Flight 175 was one of the wide-bodied Boeing 767-222. The aircraft accommodated 156 both in terms of passengers and crew on board.
The flight departed from Logan International Airport in Boston at 7:58 AM EDT. Of these, 56 were the passengers and 9 crew members, along with the five hijackers who are later found to be associated with the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
It was exactly 7 minutes into the flight at 8:14 AM EDT. The hijackers, with little to no struggle, overpowered the pilots and other passengers and took control of the aircraft.
Then they headed and changed their direction, flying towards New York City in a trajectory that was about to leave yet another terrible mark across the face of earth. The world, at that time, could not fathom the terrible scope of this flight to totally and completely wipe both the United States and the world off from the face of the earth.
Crash Into the South Tower:
United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, at 9:03 EDT. The explosion destroyed every floor of the building.
A colossal fire had engulfed the tower and consumed it. The impact and the subsequent fires had caused such destruction to the skeleton of the building that in less than an hour, the South Tower had collapsed.
By the time the South Tower exploded and then collapsed, thousands of people already lay dead. All on board Flight 175 were among the 65 passengers and crew; however, that was not the worst catastrophe in store for them.
As well as those within, thousands more died from injuries sustained within the tower and in the first responders and ordinary citizens of the wider surrounding neighborhood. For hundreds of years to come, this will go on costing: simply by virtue of lives lost in the haphazard destruction it wrought.
The Big Picture
Of course, that was devastating to the United States and to the world. Hijacked and into the cockpit of Flight 175, the September 11 attacks completely reshaped history, reshuffling policies in international security, U.S. foreign relations, and cooperation around the world in curbing terrorism.
Just hours after the attacks, the U.S. administration pursued extreme measures that would replace national security mechanisms at home and abroad.
Included among these were the establishment of a newly termed Department of Homeland Security, along with many other security measures regarding air travel, as well as the USA PATRIOT Act.
The September 11 attacks led to the global war on terrorism in which the United States initiated military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq and redefined international relations.
The attacks also drastically transformed the world counter-terrorism architecture in which most of the countries improved their network and strengthened their security systems against global terrorism.
Casualties and Lasting Legacy
There are very few sober reminders of events of that day when hijackers sent United Airlines Flight 175 crashing into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, then also known as the Twin Towers, killing 50 people aboard the aircraft and hundreds on the ground. On this day, I rank among the darkest in recorded history, standing eloquently in remembrance of the humans who lost their lives because of terrorism.
The history of that day is going to change the world in great measures-from security changes to the fight against terrorism. Victims of United Airlines Flight 175, and everybody else, are being remembered and honored to ensure they never be forgotten.
