United Airlines has three major pet travel options.
In-Cabin United Airlines for pets Travel
Pet owners can travel with animals such as cats, dogs, and other small domestic birds in the cabin where the owner is.
The carrier with the animal should comfortably fit under your seat and not extend into another seat, in front. There will be a one-way, in-cabin pet travel fee.
Pet Safe Program
This includes larger animals that cannot travel in cabins.

Trained Service Animals
- Trained service animals are allowed to accompany free of charge in the cabin while traveling.

Age and Health:
Pets have to be at least 8 weeks old and in good health to travel. Health certificate of a licensed vet is also required for the PetSafe program.
Carrier Requirements
If your pet travels in a cabin, it has to be either soft-sided or hard-sided, and should fit under a seat.
- Carrier Size: 18″ x 11″ x 11″ (45 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm).
- Pet needs to be able to stand and turn easily.
Breed Restrictions
Brachycephalic or short-nosed breeds, which are dogs and cats that suffer from health issues, cannot be enrolled in the PetSafe program.

When traveling outside the country, be sure to make sure all the country of destination requirements for vaccinations and documentation are current.
