Southwest Airlines took to the skies on June 18, 1971 with a single flight between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Herb Kelleher and Rollin King founded the airline; the mission was low-cost fares and a no-frills approach in travel with an emphasis on customer service and operating efficiency.
Indeed, probably the first point of innovation was in pricing and scheduling. It represented a complete departure from the model and severely rattled the conventional airline model.
As the years went by, Southwest Airlines increased its routes from the domestic network to the international destination, becoming one of the best low-cost carriers. Reliability and customer satisfaction built up customer relations. Southwest Airlines continues to innovate and compete in an ever-changing travel landscape, yet it remains true to its vision at its founding.
